When Lady came into our house, we made her bed in the den. She slept there a few weeks with a lamp on. One night she decided if we were going to sleep somewhere else, she was going to sleep there too. When we went to bed, here came Lady. She lay down by the side of our bed and would not go back to her bed. Nancy decided if Lady was going to sleep there, she would bring her bed and put it beside ours. Of course we had to leave the hall bathroom light on for her to sleep. This gave enough light into our bedroom for Lady. After Nancy got the bed fixed beside us (on Durells’ side), Lady got on it and went to sleep. From that day on, she slept beside us every night. When we went to bed Lady went to bed. But not before she went to each of us for nightly treats and after she made her nightly round through the rooms of the house to make sure every -thing was all right. Also, we had to put another bed in the den for her to use during the day. We put a bed in the computer room under the printer table, because Lady lay there while Durell was working at the computer.
Lady had her nightly procedure, also. She would go out to the bathroom before we went to bed. After going to the bathroom, she would make a trip around the fence. She would walk around the entire fence, stopping at each of the four gates to make sure everything was all right. The only time she would not go was when it was pouring down rain. She just was not going to have anything to do with rain. She must have thought that if it was raining nothing was going to be out there anyway. It made no difference what the temperature was, she made her trip around the fence. Once she completed her trip around the fence, she was ready to come into the house and go to bed.
As we mentioned above, Lady did not like to go out in the rain. When she had to go to the bathroom, she would go to the door. When we opened the door, if it was raining Lady would turn and go back. She would go to the bathroom in the rain only when she could wait no longer. Then she would run to the edge of the patio, go to the bathroom and run back into the house. We would then put a towel over her to dry her off. One winter morning we got up and it was snowing. Lady went to the door and when we opened it, she stood there and looked out for a while. She decided she was not going out there in that stuff and turned back into the house. Sometime later she went to the door again. This time it had stopped snowing so she tip-toed across the patio to the edge where the grass was supposed to be. She squated down to go to the bathroom, and her little butt hit the snow. She jumped up like something had lit a match under her. She turned and looked at that snow and went flying back into the house. Durell had to go out and scrape away snow on a patch of grass for Lady to go to the bathroom.
